SECOND LIVES in HOLLYWOOD

terminator-salvation

This summer of sequels (X-Men, Star Trek, Terminator, Transformers, ad infinitum) has me wondering how reincarnation works in Hollywood. What does it take to revive an ailing series? And can these efforts to renew an aging franchise tell us anything about the beliefs that animate the entertainment industry (beyond the obvious dollar signs)?

X-Men Origins reveals where Wolverine’s anger and adamantium came from. Star Trek circa 2009 unveils a younger cast and a renewed sense of purpose. And Terminator: Salvation offers more Catholic issues of guilt, penance, and sacrifice than ever before.

I’ve weighed in at a new website that aims to draw upon the wisdom of many religious paths, Patheos. Over time, it might offer the equivalent of a survey class in World Religions. I’m intrigued by how these ancient (and often conflicting) faiths continue to play out in the marketplace of ideas. Keep watching Patheos and we’ll see whether sparks fly or a different kind of flame gets lit….
