A sheep, a parachute and a slingshot

“This amazing six-minute animation by Remy Schaepman will not only amaze you with its artistic excellence, but will stimulate your thinking in a deep and meaningful way.”

- John Priddy

The Angelus Animation Jury enthusiastically found A SHEEP ON A ROOF by Rémy SCHAEPMAN to be worthy of honor as did the Babelgum Online Film Fest in Cannes, where Spike Lee awarded Remy with Best  Animation prize. Rémy SCHAEPMAN studied animation art at Gobelins, l’Ecole de l’Image, in Paris and his favorites include Wallace Gromit, Miyazaki, Pixar and Jacque Tati.  Remy’s animation is unpretentious and stylish, whimsical and heart felt. Enjoy.

A Sheep on the Roof

A Sheep on the Roof

We are proud to present the first film of the Windrider Summer Series  – the international-award-winning animated short, A Sheep on the Roof (Quidam Dégomme), by French filmmaker Rémy Schaepman, who offers his exposé on the paradox between the envy of change and the fear of novelty — and the cowardice that may result from the latter.

I love this film, and you will too! Please share the link with your friends, and stay connected with the Windrider site for related commentary by directors John Marks and Craig Detweiler  (“Purple State of Mind”).

I first heard about “A Sheep on the Roof” when it was a 2008 Angelus award winner, but I didn’t have the privilege of seeing it or meeting the filmmaker, until Windrider Prague this past March when it was featured on day four.

What I love most about animated storytelling, is that it doesn’t require translation. As I watched this French film on a giant screen, in a packed-out crowd at the National Library in Prague, I was reminded that not so long ago this theatre (founded in 1891) was behind the Iron Curtain. As the audience laughed, cheered and asked Schaepman thought-provoking questions during the Q&A time, I was inspired by the open, heart-warming, in-depth conversation we had with our new Czech friends (so NOT Iron Curtain!).

A quick summary:

A man is confronted with the change to his day-to-day existence after a sheep lands on the roof of the house across the way. A surreal sequence of events unfolds, set to a foot-tapping soundtrack. The grey Paris metro gains a whole new lease on life … but how does our main character react?
